Deze leesclub is tweetalig: dat houdt in dat de voertaal van de leesclub Engels zal
zijn en dat je kunt kiezen tussen het Nederlandse of Engelse boek als je een
kaartje koopt – het eBook krijg je er vervolgens gratis bij.

Van filosofie en kamermuziek tot foodtrucks: Nederland maakt overal een festival van. In deze nietsontziende bundel geeft Mia You haar blik op het festival dat inburgeren is.
Haar poëzie vormt zich rond globalisering en het inherente geweld tegen de lichamen
van vrouwen en migranten. Iedere dag is een festival van werk, kortstondige
bedwelming en medicatie, maar in deze gedichten wordt met humor en een wellustige
aandacht voor klank gezocht naar alternatieven. Er ontstaan onverwachte verbanden
tussen Freud, K-pop, scheepsjournalen en kauwen die code-switchen, zonder dat je als
lezer kunt vergeten dat dit lyriek is uit de loopgraaf: ‘Omdat er een oorlog woedt / tegen
onze lichamen.’

Festival komt in het Engels uit bij Belladonna Press, New York. De Nederlandse vertaling wordt verzorgd door Eddie Azulay.

Mia You (1980) is geboren in Zuid-Korea, groeide op in de Verenigde Staten en woont in Utrecht. Festival is haar tweede bundel, de eerste in Nederlandse vertaling (uitgeverij
Chaos). 

Gespreksleider: Yentl van Stokkum (1991) is een Nederlandse dichter en
toneelschrijver.

This book club is bilingual: the main language of the book club will be English, and
when purchasing a ticket, you can choose between the Dutch or English edition of
the book — the eBook is included for free.

From philosophy and chamber music to food trucks: the Netherlands turns everything
into a festival. In this uncompromising collection, Mia You offers her perspective on the
festival that is integration. Her poetry circles around globalization and the inherent
violence done to the bodies of women and migrants. Every day is a festival of labor,
fleeting intoxication, and medication — but in these poems, humor and a sensuous
attention to sound are used to seek alternatives. Unexpected connections arise between Freud, K-pop, ship logs, and jackdaws that code-switch — without letting the reader forget that this is lyricism from the trenches: “Because there is a war / against our bodies.”

Festival is published in English by Belladonna Press, New York. The Dutch
translation is by Eddie Azulay.

Mia You (1980) was born in South Korea, raised in the United States, and now lives in
Utrecht. Festival is her second poetry collection and her first to appear in Dutch
translation (published by Chaos).

Moderator: Yentl van Stokkum (1991) is a Dutch poet and playwright.
